स्वाध्यायेन महर्षिभ्यो देवेभ्यो यज्ञकर्मणा। पितृभ्यः श्राद्धदानेन नृणामभ्यर्चनेन च।।
(महाभारत – शान्तिपर्व २९२.१०)
वेदशास्त्रो का स्वाध्याय करके ऋषियों के, यज्ञकर्म के द्वारा देवताओं के, श्राद्ध और दान से पितरों के तथा स्वागत सत्कार – भोजन – सेवादि से अतिथियों के ऋण से मुक्त होता है।
Essence
In this particular shloka from the Shantiparva of Mahabharata, the ways to be rina-mukta (debt-free) from different people are mentioned, below.
- By studying¹ the vedas, one is freed from the debt to the sages.
- By performing “yajna”² we are freed from the debt of devatas.
- We gain freedom from the debt of our ancestors by performing “shraddha” & making donations.
- We are freed from the debt of our guests by welcoming them, serving food and helping them (doing seva).
Saṃskr̥ta words in context : (1) Rina (R̥ṇ )- debt, (2) svadhyaya (swādhyāya) – [self] study, (3) Dana (dāna) – Donation, (4) Pitru (pitr̥) – ancestors, (5) Yajna (yajña) – A vedic ritual involving worshipping, sacrifice in front of the sacred fire (agni).
