Tulasi Vanam

While, it is well known that our Hindu celebrations are being attacked by the state and our enemies every year selectively and in many ways (and we must raise a voice on the matter), Jagadguru Puri Shankaracharyaji gives us guidance on how festivals must be celebrated, ideally, as per dharmic values.

Holi and Deepavali are very important festivals. Deepavali is known for the worship of Bhagavati Lakshmi. This festival is celebrated post monsoon. The Deepamalika festival is celebrated with the intention of purifying the sources of energy namely – earth, water, light and air, from ancient times, by Sanatana Vedic Arya Hindus. Gradually, over time, in celebrating this festival, the sources of energy (as mentioned before), instead of being purified are getting polluted due to the ingredients/items used in the celebration.

Pujyapad Puri Shankaracharyaji strongly supports the celebration of festivals but explains that this must be done as per shastras in a way that a persons life and the environment are not badly impacted. Slowly, in Bharat, it has been observed that due to mere sentimentality, festivals are are taking a form that is diverting them from their original roots. We need to be alert and must worship devi-devatas as per shastras considering the place, time and situation (desh, kaal and paristhiti). Diwali is a celebration of victory.

Did you know that Gau Mata Worship on Diwali? Br. Hrishikeshji explains that as per tradition, Gau Mata is worshipped as Lakshmiji on Deepawali. After bathing in the morning with panchgavya (and consuming it too), Gau mata seva and puja must be done. Food items made with jaggery, dhaan, etc, and sweets must be offered to Jagat Janani Gau Mata. As per vedas, the cow who has a hump and a dewlap, and is indigenous to Bharat is to be worshipped.

Shubh Deepawali to all Hindus.
