Tulasi Vanam
This entry is part 8 of 8 in the series Women in Sanatana Dharma

In this short note we are looking at the various forms of Devi worship that may be undertaken by women. Jagadguru Puri Shankaracharyaji has mentioned that the Durga Saptashati must not be done by women. While, they can do other recitations and mantra sadhana as elaborated below.

It is auspicious to obtain initial initiation of Sri Vidya from a motherly figure. Other than Shodashi etc, where Omkar is used, women are authorized in mantras like that of Bhuvaneswari Devi. They are also authorized in the chanting of the Lalita Sahasranama.

Women can get initiation from a Guru or traditional lineage and can-do Sri Vidya aradhana. If one does not have initiation in Sri Vidya, chanting the Lalita Sahasranama or Saundarya Lahari does not give the results.

Soundarya Lahari and Lalita Sahasranama must not be chanting by looking into the grantha and reading since this gives a reverse result. Hence, it must be learnt under a brahmin who has maintained purity of conduct and has correct pronunciation. Annapoornashtaka may also be recited. After listening to a kula Guru or a capable brahmin chanting it once, one my practice the recitation.
