Tulasi Vanam

Srimajjagadguru Shankaracharya Svami Sri Nischalananda Sarasvatiji Maharaja, The Shankaracharya of Puri, elaborates upon the doubt/question raised on whether the Kanchi Pitha was established by Srī Adi Shankaracharya or not.

Shivavatar Bhagavatpada Sri Adi Shankaracharya wrote Mahanushasanam or Mathamnaya Setu on the operation of the Pīṭhas

In the text he specified that there are four maṭhas and four Acharyas. There are roughly 75  shlokas in it. In the four maṭhas, Sringeri’s name is given for the south but Kanchi is not mentioned anywhere. Then, there is Dvaraka, Jyotirmatha and Purī.

In the lineage of the Acharyas of Kanchi it is believed that Bhagavatpada Sri Adi Shankaracharya stayed there for the maximum amount of time. Shankaracharya would have stayed in several places since he walked across the country.

There are 4 vedas. Then, there are four dhamas linked to the four pithas – Rameshvaram is linked to Sringeri math, Badarinath linked to Jyotir math and the other two pithas are in the dham itself – namely Puri and Dvaraka. Kanchi is not mentioned separately in the texts. There have been several distortions in our history.

The Shankaracharya of Puri often refers to Kanchi as an associated maṭha or sub-maṭha.

He expressed his thoughts when Sri Jayendra Saraswathi ji, the head of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham attained sadgati. He had he met Sri Jayendra Sarasvatīji several times and engaged on various matters. Known to be an awakened sant and great acharya, Sri Jayendra Sawaswathi ji took several steps to protect Hindutva and also in regard to the making of the Rama Mandira at Ayodhya.
