Pujyapad Puri Shankaracharyaji gives an insight on our wicked qualities, like anger, with the example of a matchstick.

Fire produced from a matchstick burns the matchstick for sure.

Whether the fire burns something else or not, it certainly does burn the source of fire, that is, the mouth of matchstick. Similarly, our anger may or may not impact anyone else but it does impact us (as the one expressing it).

Our wickedness harms us as well as others. We must view our wicked qualities as inferior and not think of them as valuable.
