Many Hindus get confused or feel discouraged when they learn about any kind of discrimination pertaining to who can chant certain mantras, perform rituals, study of vedas, etc, that is suggested via the the traditions of sanatana dharma. There is an increased resistance in accepting any rules and regulations pertaining to dharmic practices owing to westernization, endless years of propaganda against Hindus, and labelling our sacred traditions as “superstitious”.
Today, many new cults and gurus also defy our ancient wisdom and break these rules/restrictions encouraging the use of mantras etc, inappropriately. This poses great risks for the followers who think they are doing some traditional Hindu practices (while, the reality is quite departed from the same).
It is very important to clarify our doubts in order to strengthen our faith in our ancient knowledge systems coming through the vedas and shastras. The below explanation by Pujyapad Puri Shankaracharyaji shall help us.
The methods and prohibitions given in shastras have no kind of biases. These limits are not put due to ignorance, likes or dislikes. The intention of rules and regulations is to help people get the maximum benefit and at the same time, be protected from potential harm. Please note that all our spiritual practices are very powerful and have to be utilised with care and caution.
For example, there are rules we have to follow while handling electrical appliances and wires. We need to learn about them from those who have knowledge about the functioning of electricity. Following the guidelines prevents us from getting an electric shock, and at the same time benefiting from the use of electricity.
Our shastras, laid down by great seers, contain power and their intention is to help us flourish through the practices involved, and not do them incorrectly (which would prove harmful). Thus, like we follow the shastras for what is good and to be done by us, we must also follow them with the same reverence when they guide us not to perform a certain practice.
