Qualities to Seek in a Guru

Pujyapad Puri Shankaracharyaji highlights some important qualities which a true guru must possess –
1. The guru should be learned.
2. He must have knowledge of the vedas and shastras, and the Supreme Truth.
3. He should have transcended material attachment.
4. He must belong to an authentic traditional lineage or parampara of a sat sampradaya.
5. A true guru is dedicated to the welfare of all.
6. A guru should keep us connected with Govinda and granthas. He should be able to explain the essence of the granthas and give the correct guidance that will help us reach Govinda.
