Our Biggest Desire & Existence of God

2 minute read

We all desire good food, a house, a car, a nice husband/wife, entertainment, knowledge, fancy clothes, and so much more. We wish for success, good health, fame, power, love and fulfilment. Who does not?

The efforts of our entire lives is directed towards fulfilling our various, and often endless, desires.

You may have observed that even the richest person who has all the luxury in the world and has fulfilled several of his dreams, seeks good sleep, peace and well-being. Also, have you ever noticed that when you achieve something you always wanted, after some time, a void develops again, and you start striving for the next object of desire? There is a feeling of  “something missing” and you wish for something more, despite having exactly what you fancied.

There is a big secret behind all our desires and this is applicable to people all over the world. There are three things every human being craves for, knowingly or unknowingly –

  1. The desire to be true and immortal (called “Sat”).
  2. The desire for knowledge and freedom from stupidity and ignorance. We all seek the state of pure consciousness or awareness. (called “Chit”).
  3. We want absolute bliss, that stays with us forever (called Ananda).

Even a person who does not know anything about dharma or have any faith in any deeper philosophy or Paramatma (God), desires immortality, pure consciousness and knowledge, wants to be all-powerful and in a state of eternal bliss. He desires Sat-Chit-Anand, without doubt.

If the root of all desires is Sat-Chit-Ananda, there must be something that has these attributes. Else, how can we desire it?

Just like our thirst proves the existence of water (that can alone quench our thirst), our desire for Sat-Chit-Ananda proves the existence of That which has the qualities of being true, immortal, supreme bliss and pure consciousness. We Hindus, call the embodiment of Sat-Chit-Ananda as Brahman, Atma, Paramatma or Bhagavan.

Thus, we can conclude that the biggest object of our desire is God – Supreme Brahman or Atma. Our love for everything around us is directed towards Atma which is realizing our very own true essence.

Keep exploring.
