Law of Attraction

3 minute read

You would have heard about or maybe even read the best-seller called The Secret by Rhonda Byrne (early 2000’s). This book popularized the “law of attraction” according to which our mind has great power and can draw or attract what it focusses on. Helena Blavatsky, a Russian philosopher (19th century, Theosophical Society) had first written about this concept in the West. She mentioned that her knowledge on this subject was derived from her study of Eastern philosophies – Hinduism and Buddhism.

Our ancient scriptures have been guiding us based on this law of attraction from time immemorial. The below wisdom can help us make a world of a difference to our lives and create the positive shifts we have been seeking –

  1. Whatever you keep talking or thinking about, you amplify it and attract that into your lives (in some way or the other).
  2. If you engage in condemning or criticizing the unpleasant qualities in someone’s life, you will, at some point, draw such attributes into your own life (directly or indirectly). Finding faults with others and looking down upon their character/nature, must be avoided. Instead, we must learn from them, what must not be done by us. In the same way, if we praise the good qualities of others, their skills, nature, etc, we will draw that into our own lives as well. From the praiseworthy, we must learn what qualities to imbibe in our lives. When we are trying to guide or teach someone or help someone correct their ways within our sphere of our individual influence (example – family) or space like an office, we may need to praise to encourage or highlight shortcomings for correction. Then too, tact and refinement in the way we express ourselves is essential. Else, it is best not to indulge in commenting upon the nature of others but if we cannot avoid it, we must at least avoid directing negativity unto others knowing that it shall be returned to us. It is also noteworthy, that with time, many things change. Thus, the one we praise today, maybe condemned by us tomorrow and vice versa.
  3. To protect our family, loved ones, or area of work, we may have to be harsh at times, to keep wicked persons away. This is necessary as well. Reason being – one who has wicked tendencies will only spread negativity and attract more of his own kind. He will not be receptive to what is good. While, a person who is good natured or has divine qualities will spread peace and positivity all around him and attract those who have such inclinations. Again, highlighting the law of attraction.
  4. If we focus on good things and engage our mind in learning and contemplating upon spiritual subjects through books and discourses, we shall benefit and help ourselves evolve.

Considering this law of attraction, we must be very cautious about what occupies our mind and how we engage with the world around us, since that has a powerful influence on our own lives.

There is a story shared by one of our team members – His aunt was in her 50’s when she was suffering from a terrible skin problem due to allergy from strong sunlight. There were dark patches on her face for a whole year. At that time she remembered how in her 20’s, when she was young and beautiful, she had mocked someone with vitiligo. Immediately, it hit her as to why she is suffering from this skin problem. From that day she learnt a lesson – never to mock others and what goes around comes around.

Today, we may belittle someone for his life choices or bad habits. Tomorrow, someone in our own family, our spouse or our very own children may end up with the same habits and in similar situations.

Tip – Keep a check on your conversations and what you watch and read. Ask yourself, “Is this filling my mind-space in a good and helpful way?”. If the answer is “no”, stop the activity and move to a better one.
