This entry is part 4 of 5 in the series Hindu Parenting

There is no substitute for family time.

In the current scenario, very often, this “family time” does not exist. Today, no one likes the “griha-mantralaya” or taking charge of the household. Both parents are working and even mothers are not present to attend to the needs of children.

From the point of view of psychology, this is quite harmful and makes the children irritable. Homes are destroyed this way since children do not get the love and attention they need and when they grow up, they do not take care of parents either.

The upbringing of the children left to schools and maids is not appropriate.

Whoever is present in the family, even if it is a nuclear family, it is important to take out at least one hour daily and sit together. Dialogue within the family is very important.

Family time must be utilized by in the following way:

  1. Take Bhagavan naam together or chant the Hanuman Chalisa or any other stotram, together. Do this at least for 5 minutes.
  2. Express concern about each other’s well-being.
  3. Try to clear misunderstandings. Apologize if needed and learn to maintain relationships within appropriate boundaries.
  4. Listen to discourses of Gurus, read material related to dharma, and hold family discussions.

Through this quality time spent together, we can strengthen precious family bonds and learn about dharma.
