5 Steps for Good Sleep

2 minute read

Lack of good sleep can destroy our physical and mental well-being. It drains us of our energy, and we are unable to function at our optimal levels. If you are suffering from sleepless or restless nights, these five steps can help you:

  1. Eat on time – Give at least 2 hours of gap between eating dinner and sleeping. If you eat late, your digestive process shall disrupt good sleep. Plus, if you go to bed soon after food, your dinner would not be digested properly. Ensure you give a reasonable gap between eating and sleeping. If you drink coffee, avoid it in the second half of the day.
  2. Go to bed early – The circadian rhythm is important to follow. Attempt to sleep by 10-10:30pm. If you make it too late, the quality of your sleep as well as energy in the day will be impacted adversely.
  3. Put gadgets away – The blue light of the phone and radiation is known to interfere with the biological process of falling asleep. Additionally browsing all types of content and engaging with others on the mobile stimulates the mind and prevents it slowing down in preparation for good sleep. Try to switch off all screens (TV, mobile, laptop, etc), at least an hour before sleeping (you can start with half an hour). For a gradual slow down, dim the lights of your room, play soothing music or read a book that is uplifting and maybe even spiritual.
  4. Chant the below mantra below before sleeping –
    या देवी सर्वभूतेषु निद्ररूपेण संस्थिता।
    नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमस्तस्यै नमो नमः॥
Ya devi sarvabhuteshu, Nidra rupena samsthita.
    Namastastyai Namastastyai Namastastyai namo namaha.
  5. Change your attitude – A big amount of our strain comes from the imagination that we are in full control of our lives. We think of ourselves of the director of everything, and in the process, we feel burdened and overwhelmed. When things go wrong, it is stressful and devastating. We lose our sleep. Choose this beneficial attitude – Start thinking of The Supreme Paramatma as the master of your life and your home, with a feeling of surrender. Think of yourself just as a manager. This will lift a heavy weight off your shoulders, and you shall feel a sense of relief and rest.

Start these helpful practices at the earliest to improve the quality of your life.

Suggestion – Commit for at least ten days and start journaling the process in your diary. At the end of 10 days, review – see where your weaknesses lie, assess your progress and continue further with needed alterations.
